Governments can't shut-down what they do not control, or own... They can simply attempt to deny you access to it, which is denying them access to their own possessions. (Thus pointless. As that would degrade their value of currency.)

Bitcoins ARE and alternative, and DO work for the millions using it. It is the same thing that paypal was, but without the litigation and user-rape.

It doesn't matter if someone thinks it is worthless, it only matters that someone thinks it has value. Just like any other thing used for exchanges. However, government money, you are TOLD what it is worth, and you are constantly TOLD it is worth more than others actually believe it is worth... Thus, the constant decay in value, along with overprinting for themselves, to reduce their losses and increase their gains, at our expense.

i agree with everything you said and i must add a few things, i live here in israel and i have to point out that israel does have one natural resource besides oil, it is a high amount of potash in the dead sea area, besides, the israeli stock exchange has an average return rate of 11% since its foundation(although i am not sure about the exchange rate of dollar to shekel in the equivalent period)

--If the all the exchanges disappeared and noone could get in or out of bitcoin, then the price of bitcoin would remain exactly where it is (though slowly halving in nominal price over the next ten years due to new coins being mined). People could still transact in bitcoins. The bitcoin economy could still grow with merchants accepting bitcoins etc. The fluctuations would then occur in the pricing of bitcoin goods rather than in the price of bitcoins themselves. no?

--Also by "elite" I think this article means the western elite. And by "governments" this article should say "some governments". What if some countries want bitcoin to get out from under the dollar system? What if countless tiny rogue countries want to host bitcoin exchanges? What of that new pro-bitcoin Chinese propaganda documentary that they just aired? What of the fact that countries are eye-balling bitcoin and realizing the first one to panic into bitcoin will ride the wave higher as other countries may jump in?

The key point to consider about the Internet protocol that allows Bitcoin to function both as a currency and as a unit of payment IS THAT technology has come to a point, where for the first time in history, it is now possible to separate the state from money. That is why Bitcoin may very well be the most important project on the planet, notwithstanding how fully decentralized distributed networks can be applied to other democratically dysfunctional infrastructures that plague civilizations.
