Nearly 1 In 5 Americans Have No Money To Put Food On The Table

August 22nd, 2012

Mac Slavo: While economists, government officials, and mainstream media experts argue about whether a recovery is finally taking hold, the evidence on the ground provides a clear insight about where the country is headed.

A nationwide Gallup survey involving 177,000 U.S. adults proves what many contrarians have been screaming for some time: For most Americans there is no recovery.

After having lost 40% of their wealth, millions of jobs, their homes, and with prices in all key commodity groups like food and energy rising consistently, our current economic conditions feel more like a depression than anything remotely resembling a recovery.

Have you ever wondered how billionaires continue to get RICHER, while the rest of the world is struggling?

According to the new survey, nearly one in five Americans report that there has been at least one time in the last 12 months when they did not have enough money to buy the food they or their families needed. In some parts of the country it’s even worse.

In 15 states, at least one in five Americans say they struggled to afford the food they needed at least once during the past 12 months. Nationwide, 18.2% of Americans so far in 2012 say there have been times when they could not afford the food they needed, on par with the 18.6% who had trouble affording food in 2011.

With nutritional food assistance benefits averaging of about $500 for a family in need, the 48.5 million Americans on food stamps and the additional 50 million receiving some other form of government welfare or safety net distribtion may soon find themselves in an even greater struggle.

The culprit? Rising prices everywhere. Essential goods like food and gas are a significant driving factor, especially as more and more Americans lose their jobs or jobless benefits. While the Federal Reserve continues to expand the money supply and population growth in emerging markets puts further demand on global resource availability, the only direction for prices to go is up. Coupled with the worst drought in 50 years things may get even worse for Americans next year.

I agree with Robert and Rob, also I have seen homeless on TV smoking cigarettes..many breed that can’t afford to feed kids. Since good jobs are mostly gone overseas, it’s best not to raise a family as there is a zero future for this country where no amount of work will produce just reward. Women need to stay in the workforce just to meet expenses. Having a family is only for the wealthy yada yada.

76% of fox news people are democrats. LBJ stole the Social Security money in the late 1960′s. Howard Metzenbaum, a democrat, passed the gun control act of 1968. The first motercycle helmet laws were passed by democrats as was the seatbelt law. If democrats respected freedom at all they would be something else. All democrats are no good. Most republicans are also no good. By supporting any democrat it tells me you want to run my life. Over my dead body.

Hitler and Stalin are already in the White House. They just sent a drone over your home and indefinitely detained you with no trial…for speaking out against them. Numb nuts.

Does it at all seem suspicious that not only did china get the majority of our jobs, but we also wound up owing them trillions.

And with that money that we owe china, if they choose to, they could begin buying up the defaulted mortgages.

And lastly, it is most likely that the only reason china has played along with this betrayal of the american worker class, is so it can make a claim that capitalism is bad…In fact, when you only pay workers slave wages, capitalism is bad…because the workers can not buy anything with the money they earn…it all just goes to housing and food so an economy does not grow.

America did well because workers had money left after paying the necessities and then could buy the stuff that other workers made at their jobs

Wasn’t really a good idea to send most of our jobs to china and mexico was it?……….we never had this kind of trouble before the slave trade agreements!

And the jobs we had were mostly full-time jobs that included healthcare coverage and most of the employers still made a profit.

And while many might blame the trouble on the housing bubble…that bubble was created to try and keep the economy going as the jobs went out.
And while the jobs went out, our government got much less in tax revenue, so it borrowed from China and russia…now we owe trillions

Bozo the clown could have done better at governing our country in the last twenty years

@Will Uh Will, what safety net do you speak of? Social Security is devoid of money. The govt is robbing Peter to pay Paul. Not sure where you’ve been the last 4 years, but states are broke due to out of control spending on wasteful, needless social programs. Know how to hunt? Grow a garden? Live below your means? Hope so because the tough times, they are a knocking on the door. Good luck to you.

What is really sad is that I bet a great number of these people will vote for Romney and Ryan, who will do their best to dismantle remaining social safety nets of Medicare and Social Security, plunging the elderly into extreme poverty by the tens of millions. The dumbed down population of this country would vote for Hitler and Stalin if they were on the Republican ticket. Fox News is constantly brainwashing common people into voting for their own destruction.

many basic grocery items’ prices have risen 50% in a little over one year – vanilla creamer for tea/coffee as one example has gone from $2.19 to $3.68 at the local Safeway in one leap this month. Whatever happened to slight price increases?

This article actually paints to rosey of a picture. With half of the population on some sort of government income or assistance, the truth is that 50% couldnt put food on the table. That’s why they get help from the government in the first place. The survey is botched from the start.
